Just like his bowls, Suk Keun Kang’s wooden dishes are driven by nature and humility – characteristics heard in the soft shapes and natural curves. From his base in Ulsan, he hand-carves his functional tableware before utilising the eco-friendly ottchil technique, where more than 30 coats of lacquer – derived from the sap of rhus trees – form a coated film that’s resilient against spills and stains. The final results are comparable to porcelain, their notable thinness deceivingly durable.
