Ryan Roche is an influential force in design, having pioneered several ethical practices in her bid to become a keen advocate for a circular economy. One of the ways she applies this is her use of certified recycled cashmere yarns, produced in Italy without the need for dyeing, further reducing their environmental impact. Then, craftspeople in Nepal bring her designs to life, utilising traditional hand-looming techniques. At once timeless and of-the-moment, her collections have a convivial feminine spirit and lead a masterclass in how characterful minimalism can be. She pinpoints much of her success to her family, like her mother, who would take her from window shopping to fabric store,  as well as her knitter and milliner grandmothers.

Meet The Maker:

Ryan Roche

Ryan Roche got her start studying classic tailoring and couture sewing for two years after high school, before specialising in knitwear at San Francisco’s Academy of Art. In 2004, she moved to New York and set up base with her family, where she set out to fill the void for conscientiously made cashmere childrenswear. This led her to seek out workshops in Nepal to help her bring her special sketches to life. Soon enough, requests poured in for her pieces to be made in adult sizes too. Ever committed to a thoughtful making process, Roche uses cashmere with a long list of sustainability certifications, such as GOTS, GRS, RAF and OCS, and champions recycled yarns through her innovative buy-back programme.
