Acclaimed arist Katie Stout creates work as an amalgam of established craft techniques, historical decorative arts and conceptual fine art. Based in Germantown, New York, Stout embraces the unexpected by deconstructing traditional processes to transcend function and form. Spanning design, fine art and fashion, Stout’s references veer as widely as the intricate patterns of Victorian lace, kitsch suburban interiors and female-dominated artisanship. Through her distinctive lens, her works subvert and dismantle historical frameworks and understandings of functionality. At times, objects shout with carefree humour, while others are weighted with a critique of outmoded gender roles. Her designs cover everything from tea sets to seating, and her works are exhibited in renowned galleries and museums across the globe.

Meet the Maker:

Katie Stout

Katie Stout uses traditional materials to create non-traditional forms, pushing the boundaries of what is expected and acceptable. While she often makes alone, her time at Schloss Hollenegg for Design in Austria saw her collaborate with storied pottery manufacturer, Augarten Porcelain, to produce bespoke tabletop objects that reference ceramic history and local folklore.

The Artist Studio is an exclusive curation of collectible artworks from global artists, specially selected by New York-based design gallery R & Company. Come visit us by appointment only at 82 Franklin Street Gallery in New York from October 31-December 21, 2024.
