Carl Auböck

Anchor Brass Corkscrew and Paperweight

$870

An anchor symbolises an unbreakable bond, which makes it a fitting motif for the 100th anniversary of the house of Auböck – a moment in history the MAK will be marking with a dedicated exhibition to the fourth-generation workshop. One object that’s set to feature is this brass anchor, which was first devised by Carl Auböck II in 1936. A special mechanism means it can be unscrewed to reveal a handy corkscrew, but when closed it serves its second purpose as a nautical paperweight.

Meet the Maker:

Carl Auböck

After years at the forefront of the Bauhaus and Wiener Werkstätte traditions, Carl IV still works in the same atelier with the original brass moulds. He has modernised the hand-worked desk sets with input from designers like Michael Anastassiades, yet the handmade ethos remains.
