An antithesis to the sleek and clean aesthetic of the digital age, Luam Melake’s first ever picture frames celebrate the charm of reality through bright colours, playful tactility and off-kilter execution. Each piece is a storybook of its own accord, containing ink drawings that tell intimate stories between friends, lovers and family. Melake continues her investigation into human connection, but this time within a urethane frame of collaged materials such as gemstones, glitter and wood.

Meet the Maker:

Luam Melake

Luam Melake is best known for her work in polyurethane foam to create geometric silhouettes, both as furniture and objects. To bring her concepts to life, Melake shapes the foam and then applies thin layers of an industrial urethane coating to form a durable skin that functions like an exoskeleton. Translucent dyes deliver the finishing touches, creating painterly effects and dimensional colour that enhance the sculptural composition of the works.

The Artist Studio is an exclusive curation of collectible artworks from global artists, specially selected by New York-based design gallery R & Company. Come visit us by appointment only at 82 Franklin Street Gallery in New York from October 31-December 21, 2024.
