Hee Woo’s bamboo-based craft is hands-on in every respect; first, the stems are picked from Damyang in South Korea, before they’re heated, rubbed and dried naturally in the sun for several months. These strips are then painstakingly woven together in a process both tactile and time-consuming, with every aspect individually assessed to ensure detail-oriented results such as this box.

Even the most abundant bamboo grove would struggle to rival the fruits of Damyang, the forest famed for its optimum environmental and geographical conditions – conditions that have proceeded to secure this rural town as the hub of bamboo handicraft. Every winter, Hee Woo visits this pocket of South Korea to personally select, cut and trim bamboo of the Wangdae variety, which he can then use to rustle up his trays, baskets and boxes by hand. In his oeuvre, stems go from towering to tightly woven, while the colour reflects the passage of time, starting off as freshly cut green before transitioning to a soft neutral.
