Coral Swimmer Crab Hand-Painted Porcelain Serving Platter

Araceli of Casa Adams found her muse along the shorelines of her husband’s family home in Lake Macquarie. She works from her Sydney-based studio – aptly named Coconut Crab – where she crafts and paints species-specific porcelain by hand. Each piece is designed to spread the word about marine conservation, with watercolour-like glazes mirroring the varied palette of the underwater world. This serving platter spotlights a coral swimmer crab (charybdis feriata), which is found on sandy-mud substrates and around live coral in the Indo-West Pacific.

Araceli Adams’ love for ceramics started during childhood, as she became acquainted with antique pottery from Talavera de la Reina while living in Spain. The years that followed saw her build on this passion, and she travelled to New York and Sydney to study it in greater depth. In 2019, her Sydney-based workshop came to be, which she runs alongside her husband, Dominic. Her handcrafted creations are like precious jewels uncovered from the bottom of the sea, with hand-painted scenes inspired by the rich biodiversity of her Australian home. Designs lead a masterclass in ichthyology – simply look to the reverse to discover the species and ocean native to each crustacean, mollusc or fish.
