Since 1983, Kim Pan-ki has been a full-time ceramicist, using the time to research, experiment and put into practice a variety of complex techniques. With this jar, we see the simple yet effective results of the comb-pattern method, one that’s been celebrated in Korean culture for over 12,000 years. Note how it comes to life through delicate etchings on the clay’s surface, wonderfully enhancing the wide, abstract form of this bowl.

Meet the Maker:

Kim Pan-ki

With each creation, Kim Pan-ki experiments with different techniques – from buncheong to celadon – while utilising the comb-pattern style, a method indigenous to Korea during the Neolithic period where handcrafted clay is fired in open or semi-open pits.
