Rabea Gebler has a deep appreciation for urushi lacquering, and with this maple butter spreader, we see the wonderful results that stem from the technique. The shape is roughed with an axe before being carved and lacquered with multiple layers of urushi – a natural material that’s harvested from the tree of the same name, and only hardens in a controlled humid environment. Note how thinly it’s been applied to piece, ensuring the unique grain of the wood can shine through.
