Kelly Lamb’s ceramic gem clusters are made by employing a Western derivation of raku, the Japanese ceremonial firing technique in which a clay object is glazed and then placed in a container of combustible material. Each hand-cast sculpture is painted with glazes, kiln-fired and buried into a pile of soft matter which will ignite with the heat.

Meet the Maker:

Kelly Lamb

When she moved to Los Angeles in 2005, Kelly Lamb established herself as a maker of funky – and functional – design objects. Discussing her making process with clay, Lamb says “it’s like an orchestrated dance that’s about this transformation of these personal effects and how they affect the glazes” – the results of such a dance are objects that are akin to aggregate gemstones.
