Rabea Gebler has a deep appreciation for urushi lacquering, and with this maple butter spreader, we see the wonderful results that stem from the technique. The shape is roughed with an axe before being carved and lacquered with multiple layers of urushi – a natural material that’s harvested from the tree of the same name, and only hardens in a controlled humid environment. Note how thinly it’s been applied to piece, ensuring the unique grain of the wood can shine through.

German-born Rabea Gebler mastered the art of Japanese woodturning and Urushi lacquering in Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture. She developed a knack for the lost art of Wagatabon – a carving technique originated by roof-shingle craftspeople in Wagatani – which involves creating characterful ridges in chestnut slabs throughout the wooden grain. Look out for Gebler’s authentic, unique tableware that pays tribute to Japan's age-old craft.
