Richard Marquis has an encyclopaedic collection of ‘ordinary’ things in his studio to inspire his whimsical, witty and ever-evolving body of work. In his oeuvre, simple forms belie complex techniques and sentimental stories; the Core Vessel series, for example, utilises the murrine cane technique, which he favoured because of the infinite pattern possibilities that can result from the stretching and cutting processes. It’s a skill he mastered during his Venini fellowship in Murano during the 1960s/70s.

Meet the Maker:

Richard Marquis

Glassblowing extraordinaire Richard Marquis has an extremely prolific archive, including several hundred snowmen sculptures from his annual Frosty series. During the late 60s, he undertook a fellowship in Murano with Venini, where he picked up new techniques – the most prominent being the murrine cane, a learning he brought back to the States and consistently applied to his work moving forward.
