Maison Pichon Uzès has many signatures, but braided bowls and baskets are the most iconic. Craftspeople utilise the corbeille technique to form the clay into soft coils that are woven by hand and reinforced with small flowers or buttons. A week of drying is followed by an underglaze, bisque fire, lead-based glaze and second firing. The process is meticulous and controlled, taking up to a month to reach the work of art you see here.

Maison Pichon Uzès is an eighth-generation maker based in Uzès, France – as has been the case since its founding in 1802. It’s loved for its intricately braided ceramic baskets that take up to a month to complete, where several hours of handling and drying result in wonderful centrepieces, fruit bowls or dried flower baskets for the home. But basketry isn’t the only signature; mixed earthenware also has a rich history for the artisan. During the 1950s, its products were made from porous clay from the Uzès region and glazed in colours intrinsically linked to the South of France, like olive green and Provence yellow. Today, the palette has expanded, but the artistic element of each creation remains.
