The home-design delights to bring the Côte d'Azur to your kitchen.
Jean-Christophe Hermann grew up near Lake Annecy in France, and recalls visiting an old pottery at just five years old that inspired him to pursue ceramics – a moment that led to the opening of Poterie d’Évires in 1971. Influenced by the landscape of their Haute-Savoie home, the Hermann family – Jean-Christophe and son David – hand-paint local delights onto their light, earthy and decorative clay; alpine flowers like tiny crocuses and soldanellas often feature, as well as native creatures such as Chamois and Ibex. In 1981, after exploring his region’s brocante for many years, Jean-Christophe opened a museum dedicated to the pottery and folk art of Haute-Savoie. It’s the largest and most comprehensive collection in the world and displays pieces that date as far back as the 12th century. ABASK made a special road trip to the French Alps to hand-pick pieces from its exquisite collection.

Poterie de Cliousclat is situated in a small hilltop village in Drôme, France, a region with a rich history of traditional pottery that dates back to the 10th century. Its workshop was rebuilt in 2014 after being listed as a historical monument, home to specific know-how and working methods. Today, it’s a hive of creativity, host to a small community of talented makers – currently four – with unique styles and processes. The uniting factor is a love and appreciation for colour and French techniques, which they put into practice by applying pre-made engobes and slips.
Moustiers Sainte-Marie has been a pottery haven since the 17th century, making it the perfect location for Atelier Soleil. Since 1995, master craftsman Franck Scherer and his wife Géraldine Dorche have been at the helm, continuing the legacy established by Scherer’s mother in the 1960s – they even acquired her original moulds in 2006. To bring their luminous faïence to life, they work with artisans who specialise in free-hand painting, as only the steadiest hand can apply their oxides that are absorbed instantly. We’re delighted to hold an exclusive collection of hand-painted vegetable plates – the best way to get your five-a-day.

Old friends Ivan Pericoli and Benoît Astier de Villatte met at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, leading to the launch of Astier de Villatte in 1996. Since the beginning, they’ve been charmed with ideas of the imperfect, finding beauty in uneven glazes, dark pockmarks and subtle ripples. But these details only emphasise the craft tale behind each piece – stories that start with a single sheet of black terracotta clay extracted from Parisian quarries. They follow traditional Roman methods to bring each ‘dream object’ to life, shaping and inscribing each one with the potter’s initials and finishing with a high-shine white porcelain glaze.
Maison Pichon Uzès is an eighth-generation maker based in Uzès, France – as has been the case since its founding in 1802. It’s loved for its intricately braided ceramic baskets that take up to a month to complete, where several hours of handling and drying result in wonderful centrepieces, fruit bowls or dried flower baskets for the home. But basketry isn’t the only signature; mixed earthenware also has a rich history for the artisan. During the 1950s, its products were made from porous clay from the Uzès region and glazed in colours intrinsically linked to the South of France, like olive green and Provence yellow. Today, the palette has expanded, but the artistic element of each creation remains.

Goyon-Chazeau is a French third-generation knife maker whose story began in 1953. Its signature, Cœur de Forge, alludes to the fact that it’s one of the last of its kind to produce full-forged table knives, which is no mean feat – the forge used is made from a round steel bar that’s heated until it merges, then pressed to obtain the final shape. But that isn’t the only impressive part of the design story, as each piece undergoes a meticulous manufacturing process of over 40 steps, from sharpening and manual finishing to ergonomics. The result? Designs made from rare, precious materials that’ll last a lifetime.
