In ancient times, wasted paper would often be used to make household goods by using the jiseung method – a centuries-old technique where hand-corded strips of paper are tightly woven together to form functional objects. Young Mi Park is one of the few protecting the method, using Korean handmade paper (otherwise known as hanji) to construct heritage-filled, hard-wearing designs such as this basket. She starts by soaking and drying the paper in the sun, which she repeats 15+ times; then, she dyes it using natural persimmon extract, ensuring she has the correct humidity levels. Overall, the process takes between one to two months.
