In the 1930s, António Durão created a workshop employing masters in wool; decades later, Jose Rosa brought together the region’s manta producers – here is where Fábrica Alentejana de Lanifícios was born, garnering the creative eye of Dutch artisan Mizette Nielsen in 1977, who invested in the timeless tradition of heirloom blankets. Fast forward to 2020, and the maker began a new era under the artistic eye of three Portuguese visionaries, each one committed to the customs of Alentejo. They work with local artisans and use fabrics from merino sheep that have roamed nearby fields for centuries. The result? Handcrafted pieces with a smooth texture that’s naturally water-resistant, detailed with motifs and colour palettes inspired by Alentejo’s architecture.
