Zsuzsanna Nyul’s creative language is driven by her native Hungary – namely the historic folk craft that’s been a big part of the country’s heritage since the Middle Ages. She claims to feel moved by its honesty and authentic charm, so makes sure to continue this thread in her own work. These plates are part of a collection created exclusively for ABASK, and are handcrafted and painted by Nyul herself.

In an effort to preserve the 250-year-old indigo block-printing methods of her native Hungary, Nyul works alongside the country’s last remaining workshops to produce her rich linens and ceramics. Printing by hand with custom wood and brass blocks leads to charming imperfections in the pattern and a rustic, “brushstroke” quality that makes each piece unique.
